Welcome October

As we move into October we are reading some beautiful picture books and poems to celebrate the arrival of fall. Students are enjoying reading fall poems and illustrating them in their notebooks. We have added some fall play materials to our light table area. The children have some student-choice time for puzzles, blocks, and art each day. We have been able to keep an outdoor morning snack break time going in between our literacy skills time and math time.

In math, we continue to learn about counting all and counting on from a bigger number to solve addition problems. Students use various math tools to help them count on including number paths, connecting cubes and their fingers too. Our lessons include fluency practice and lots of student discourse to discuss thoughts and strategies we are using to solve problems.

In our literacy skills lessons we continue to practice segmenting and blending words with 3 and 4 sounds, learn new tricky words to read and spell, and we have learned that nouns can be a person, place or thing. Students will begin reading stories in our first decodable book called Snapshots. All students will have access to the decodable and activities that support it. Students will also have access to a variety of other books that will support the diverse range of readers in our classroom.

In Knowledge time we have moved on to our next unit which is learning about the human body and ways to stay healthy. The children will be learning the 5 systems of the body including, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems. The students will work together to discuss things we know about our body, things we wonder about or want to know, and things we have learned as the unit ends.

Mid-September Learning and Fun

The children have been busy enjoying our fables and stories during our Knowledge lessons. The children draw detailed pictures to represent story elements such as characters, setting, and events. In math, we are learning how to count on from 5 as we compare different amounts and write number sentences. All of our math practice work is kept in student workbooks that will be sent home at the end of each math unit. During our literacy skills time we have been completing the beginning of the year benchmark assessments. This week we will return to our regular skills lessons that will lead us to our first decodable book very soon. The children enjoy a student activity choice time before we head down for our lunch and recess time. This is a time for the children to build peer connections through play and exploration using a variety of materials in our classroom.

September learning has begun!

The children have been enjoying their first days of school. Last week we spent time exploring the classroom, learning daily routines while getting to know each other and having some time to play. This week we are already beginning our formal curriculum lessons which include math, language arts skills, and knowledge lessons. We are using a new math curriculum this year called Eureka. Each lesson has 4 main components: fluency, launch, learn, and land. In Skills lessons, we are working on letter formation, segmenting and blending sounds, and word-chaining activities. Our first Knowledge unit begins with Stories and Fables that will allow children to understand fiction and story elements such as character, events, setting, and the moral and lesson of each fable.
