We have completed our study of ancient civilizations and will begin studying astronomy in January. The children are gaining more fluency in reading our decodable stories and are also becoming more independent in answering comprehension questions in complete sentences.
In math, we have been learning a variety of more challenging strategies to support addition by making a ten and decomposing numbers to add them in a different capacity. For example, 8+6 can be added as 10+4=14 when you transfer 2 from the six to make a ten with the 8 and then add the remaining 4.
These strategies take a lot of practice before they can become familiar and are used more often than a simple counting-on strategy.
On the last day before our holiday break the children are enjoying wearing pajamas in school, sharing their stuffed animals with their friends and meeting our third grade buddies.
Thank you to all first grade families for contributing to purchasing all of the remaining items from our classroom wish list. This was so generous of you all. The items will all be very useful in creating meaningful and interesting learning experiences for the children.
Wishing everyone a wonderful vacation.
